Summary
Need for digitalization likely to drive growth opportunities for med-tech and health-tech in the Netherlands
As of 2021-22, Netherlands has 329 private healthcare facilities, with 8 tertiary care facilities, 182 secondary care facilities, with the remaining being primary care facilities. The country is well-known for high-quality specialist treatments, the availability of public and private insurances, and equal access to healthcare services across all income groups. Medical professionals and technology developers are working on accelerating medical technology advancements in alignment with the Federation of Medical Specialists vision 2025. Despite the reduction in mortalities due to non-communicable diseases, cancer remains to cause over 35,000 mortalities annually. Since 2015, waiting times have increased for elective surgeries and cancer treatments. Even though first-time referrals to a specialist are in short order, follow-up visits have high waiting times, usually more than three weeks. The delay in follow-up appointments increases the number of preventable mortalities. For example, cancer alone accounts for about 30% of mortalities that could be avoided due to preventative check-ups.
Currently, the Netherlands is need for digitization of its top hospitals towards ensuring better coordination between specialties and smoother care orchestration. The overall infrastructure related to digitally native healthcare facilities is lower in the country when compared to other Scandinavian nations. The lack of a nationally executed IT infrastructure continues to pose challenges such as siloed patient data in EMRs and other departmental repositories. This further hinders comprehensive and end-to-end management of patients especially when dealing with chronic conditions.
According to EMeRG’s new Hospital Intelligence Report for the Netherlands, there are significant growth opportunities for digitization initiatives across General Hospitals as well as Academic / tertiary care hospitals in the country. Netherlands currently has only about 6 HIMSS Level 6 / 7 healthcare facilities. In addition, the secondary care facilities continue to demonstrate sizeable market growth potential for diagnostic and nuclear medicine equipment. As per Hospetrack, there are only about 90 SPECT / SPECT-CT systems across the Netherlands.
The report provides account-level directional detail on total beds, ICU beds, ORs, ventilators, incubators, and other medical equipment installed in the Netherlands, as well as Anesthesia Machines, Dialysis machines, C-Arms, Cath Labs, PET, SPECT, CT, MRI scanners, Ultrasound, and X-Ray machines, Mammography machines, DEXA and LINAC making it a comprehensive source of hospital-level intelligence for the Netherlands.
The report is a skillfully designed dataset that is a valuable resource for any organization in the process of optimizing sales targets, estimating market potential, or developing an account management strategy in the Netherlands. It provides a graphical overview of the country’s health infrastructure, as well as a hospital-level view of resources, directional information on medical device installed base, hospital demographics, and care services.
